Downpipe Repairs, Replacement & New Downpipes

Blocked, leaking or disconnected downpipes? Cristian is a licensed roof plumber based in Dandenong who repairs, replaces and installs downpipes across Melbourne.

Signs your downpipes need attention

  • Gutters overflowing near the outlet, even when they're clean, which often points to a blocked downpipe.

  • Water spraying from a joint or split, or running down the outside wall.

  • Rust or holes, especially near the bottom of the downpipe.

  • Brackets pulling away from the wall, or a downpipe that moves in the wind.

  • Water pooling at the base of the downpipe, or soggy ground against the house.

  • A gurgling or backed-up outlet after heavy rain.

If water is getting inside your home during a storm, call 0410 924 363, 24/7, for emergency make-safe work, with the proper repair to follow. See emergency plumbing.

Downpipe services

Blocked downpipes

Leaves, sludge and debris can build up in the outlet or the bend at the bottom of a downpipe. We clear the blockage and check why it happened, so it doesn't come straight back after the next storm.

Downpipe repairs

We fix split, dented and leaking downpipes, loose or missing brackets, and joints that have come apart. If most of the downpipe is sound, a repair is usually the sensible fix.

Downpipe replacement

When a downpipe has rusted through or been badly damaged, a new one is better value than patching it. We remove and dispose of the old downpipes and any rubbish from the job.

New downpipes for new builds and extensions

We install downpipes in the right places for the roof and gutters, ready to connect to the stormwater system or a rainwater tank.

Disconnected downpipes

A downpipe that empties onto the ground can send water against your walls and foundations. We reconnect it properly to the stormwater drain or tank.

Downpipes are one part of the system. For gutter repairs and replacement, see gutters. For box gutters, rainheads, sumps and stormwater connections, see roof drainage.

What affects the cost of downpipe work

Every house is different. What makes the most difference:

  • Number of downpipes: how many need clearing, repairing or replacing

  • Height and access: single or double storey, tight side paths, and whether a ladder is enough or edge protection is needed

  • Material and finish: the downpipe type and colour chosen to match your gutters

  • Connection: whether the downpipe needs reconnecting to the stormwater drain or tank

  • Gutters: whether the gutter outlets also need replacing

A call-out fee applies; you'll get a clear quote before any work starts.

How a downpipe job runs

  1. Get in touch. Call 0410 924 363 or send a quote request. Form enquiries get a reply within 24 hours.

  2. Inspection. Cristian checks the downpipes, gutter outlets and stormwater connection to find the real cause of the problem.

  3. Clear quote. A call-out fee applies for the visit. Your written quote then sets out what needs doing, with repair and replacement options where both make sense. No work starts until you've approved it.

  4. The work. The downpipes are cleared, repaired or replaced, fixed securely to the wall and connected properly, and the old downpipes and rubbish are taken away.

  5. Paperwork. For work valued over $750 (labour and materials included), you get a compliance certificate within five days, as Victorian law requires.

Downpipe FAQs

Do I need a licensed plumber to replace downpipes?

Yes. In Victoria, installing, replacing or repairing downpipes, and connecting them to a stormwater drain or tank, is roofing (stormwater) work. It must be done by a plumber licensed or registered in that class. You can check a plumber's licence on the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) website. Flow Now's licence number is 125484.

Will I get a compliance certificate?

If the total value of the job is over $750, including labour and materials, the licensed plumber must give you a compliance certificate within five days of finishing and lodge it with the BPC. Keep the certificate with your property records.

Why does my downpipe keep blocking?

The usual causes are leaves and debris washing in from the gutters, a gutter with no outlet strainer, or a bend that traps debris. Clearing the blockage fixes it for now. Gutter cleaning or gutter guard can stop it happening again.

Why is my gutter overflowing near the downpipe?

Usually because the downpipe or its outlet is blocked. If the downpipe is clear, the cause may be a downpipe that's too small, or too few downpipes for the size of the roof. The inspection will show which one it is.

Do you take away the old downpipes?

Yes. Removing and disposing of the old downpipes and any rubbish from the job is part of a downpipe replacement.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Dandenong and do a lot of downpipe work across the south-east, including Noble Park, Keysborough, Springvale, Clayton, Narre Warren, Berwick and Frankston. We cover the rest of Melbourne too, so wherever you are, give us a call.
