Signs of a roof drainage problem
-
Water coming through the ceiling in heavy rain, especially near a box gutter.
-
Box gutters or rainheads overflowing, even after they've been cleaned.
-
Water pooling against the house or around the foundations.
-
Downpipes emptying onto the ground instead of into the drain.
-
Damp or mould on internal walls, or a damp smell under the house.
-
Rust or holes in a box gutter, rainhead or sump.
-
Downpipes backing up at ground level, or water bubbling out of the ground near a downpipe, which can point to a blocked or broken stormwater drain.

Roof drainage services
What roof drainage covers
Roof drainage is the system that collects rain from the roof and carries it away: gutters, box gutters, rainheads, sumps, overflows, downpipes and the connection to the stormwater drain or a rainwater tank. If one part fails, water can end up in your ceiling, inside your walls or under the house.
Stormwater connections
We connect downpipes to the below-ground stormwater drain or a rainwater tank, and reconnect downpipes that have come loose or been left emptying onto the ground.
Box gutter repairs and replacement
Box gutters sit inside the roofline, so when they leak or overflow, the water usually comes inside. We repair and replace box gutters and check they have enough fall and outlet capacity for the roof.
Below-ground stormwater drains
Below the downpipes, the stormwater drain carries water away from the house. Cristian clears blocked stormwater drains, repairs cracked, broken or root-damaged drains, and lays new stormwater drains for new builds, extensions and properties where the old drain has failed.
Rainheads and sumps
Rainheads and sumps collect water from box gutters and feed it into the downpipes. We repair, replace and install them so water doesn't back up into the roof.
New builds and extensions
We install roof drainage and stormwater connections on new builds and extensions, under the one licence that also covers plumbing and gas.
For standard eaves gutters, see gutters. For blocked, leaking or rusted downpipes, see downpipes.
Overflows
Â
An overflow gives water a safe way out when a gutter or box gutter is blocked or can't keep up. We fit overflows where they're missing and fix ones that send water to the wrong place.
Who we do roof drainage for
Property managers and landlords
Leaking box gutters and water under the house can lead to damp, mould and tenant complaints. We respond 24/7, with a 60-minute response for emergencies, and keep you updated on what we found and what was done. Licence and insurance details are available on request.
Builders and renovators
We install roof drainage and stormwater connections on new builds and extensions. Because the same licence covers plumbing and gas, there's one fewer trade to coordinate on site.
Homeowners
From one overflowing rainhead to a new box gutter, the work is explained before it starts.

What affects the cost of roof drainage work
Every roof is different. What makes the most difference:
-
What needs doing: a repair, a replacement or a new installation
-
Box gutter size and length: how many metres need repairing or replacing
-
Height and access: single or double storey, and whether scaffolding or edge protection is needed
-
Rainheads, sumps and overflows: whether they also need replacing or adding
-
Stormwater connection: whether downpipes need connecting or reconnecting to the drain or tank
-
Below-ground drains: how long the drain is, how deep it sits, and what's above it, such as paving or a driveway
A call-out fee applies; you'll get a clear quote before any work starts.

Roof drainage FAQs
Â
Do I need a licensed plumber for roof drainage work?
Yes. In Victoria, work on any part of a roof drainage system, including connecting stormwater pipes to a below-ground drain or a rainwater tank, is roofing (stormwater) work. It must be done by a plumber licensed or registered in that class. You can check a plumber's licence on the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) website. Flow Now's licence number is 125484.
Will I get a compliance certificate?
If the total value of the job is over $750, including labour and materials, the licensed plumber must give you a compliance certificate within five days of finishing and lodge it with the BPC. Keep the certificate with your property records.
Why is my box gutter leaking into the house?
Common causes are a blocked outlet or rainhead, a box gutter that's too small for the roof, not enough fall, no overflow, or rust through the base. The inspection will show which one it is.
What is a rainhead?
A rainhead is a box fixed to the outside wall that collects water from a box gutter and feeds it into a downpipe. Most also have an overflow, so water spills outside instead of backing up into the roof.
Do you fix blocked or broken stormwater drains?
Yes. Cristian clears blocked below-ground stormwater drains, repairs cracked, broken or root-damaged drains, and lays new ones. In Victoria, work on a below-ground stormwater drain is drainage work, a licensed class of plumbing work, so it must be done by a plumber licensed or registered in that class. He also connects downpipes to the stormwater drain or a rainwater tank.
