A plumbing emergency is stressful enough without worrying about whether you're being ripped off. Understanding what's a fair call-out fee in Melbourne — and what the red flags look like — means you can make a smart decision even at 2am with water flooding your kitchen.

What emergency plumbers charge in Melbourne

Time of call

Typical call-out fee

Hourly rate

Standard hours (Mon–Fri 7am–5pm)

$80–$150

$100–$150/hr

After hours (evenings and weekends)

$150–$300

$150–$220/hr

Late night (midnight–6am)

$200–$400

$200–$280/hr

Public holidays

$250–$500

$220–$300/hr

The call-out fee typically covers the plumber's travel time to your property. Hourly rates are charged on top for the time spent doing the work. Most emergency jobs take 1–3 hours.

What's included in a call-out fee

A legitimate call-out fee covers the plumber's travel to your property, time spent assessing the problem, and in some cases a fixed amount of on-site labour time. Always ask what's included before the plumber arrives — a reputable plumber will tell you clearly over the phone.

Red flags — signs you may be dealing with a dodgy operator

  • No fixed price or estimate before starting work — a reputable plumber will give you an upfront quote (or at minimum an estimate) before touching anything

  • Pressure to approve work immediately without a written quote — especially for larger jobs, you should always have time to read and agree to a quote

  • Call-out fees that seem extremely low advertised but much higher when billed — classic bait-and-switch. "$49 call-out" that becomes $400+ once they're in your home.

  • Unable to provide their BPC plumber's license number — all licensed plumbers in Victoria have one and should provide it on request or on their invoice

  • No invoice or receipt provided — always get written documentation of work done and cost paid

  • Recommending extensive additional work on the spot without showing you evidence — legitimate upsells come with explanation. Ask to see the CCTV footage if they claim there's additional drain damage.

Your rights as a consumer

Under Australian Consumer Law, you have the right to a clear quote before work begins, to refuse work and only pay a reasonable call-out/assessment fee if you don't proceed, and to receive an itemized invoice. If you feel you've been overcharged, you can contact Consumer Affairs Victoria.

How to be prepared before an emergency

The best time to find a reliable emergency plumber is before you need one — not at midnight with a burst pipe. Look up a local plumber with genuine Google reviews, save their number, and know where your water shut-off valve is. Having a trusted plumber's number saved means you won't be frantically Googling at 2am and potentially calling whoever shows up first regardless of their practices.
